From the days before Christmas to the first week of January, Tulum has its busiest stretch of the year. Hotels and villas fill, beach clubs sell out their front rows, and on New Year's Eve most restaurants and venues switch to special formats. Planning the holidays in Tulum is less about finding places and more about securing them in the right order.
Why are the holiday weeks different in Tulum?
Demand peaks at the same time for everyone, and the Hotel Zone has one main road along the beach. Prices and minimum spends rise, many venues ask for deposits that are non-refundable close to the date, and walk-in tables practically disappear. The calendar matters too: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the night of December 31 each behave like a separate event, with their own menus and bookings.
What books out first?
New Year's Eve dinners and parties go first, followed by front-row beds at the beach clubs between December 26 and January 1, and then the private dining experiences that only take a few bookings per night: dinner in the Beachfront Tunnel at Casa Malca, the rooftop nests of the Kanan Nest Experience and a Beach Dinner by La Zebra on the sand.
Beach clubs for the holiday days
For a full day with music and food on the beach: Taboo, Tantra, Bagatelle, Vagalume with its Giant Hand Bridge, Rosa Negra Beach and Mia. For something calmer: Gitano Beach, Ahau and the adults-only Kanan. Away from the sea, Vesica is built around a natural cenote and Yellow Nest offers a jungle day club with temazcal rituals.
Where to book dinner
For a dinner that becomes the night: Rosa Negra with its fire shows, the Japanese Tora, the steakhouse Chambao, Karma in its three-level treehouse and Gitano, whose Jungle Fiesta takes over on Fridays. For a quieter table: Kitchen Table and its wood-fire tasting menu, the candlelit NU Restaurant, Mi Amor on the cliffs over the Caribbean and Casa Malca.
How does New Year's Eve work in Tulum?
On December 31 most restaurants replace their regular menu with a set dinner at a fixed price per person, often with a single or double seating, and many venues sell the night as a ticketed event. Deposits are usual and the terms are stricter than on any other night. On the nightlife side, the headliner events at Papaya Playa Project, Tehmplo, Vagalume and Bonbonniere are announced in the weeks before and their tables go fast.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
December 24 and 25 are quieter than New Year's Eve but still behave like special dates. Several restaurants offer a Christmas Eve set dinner, and families and larger groups book long tables early. Christmas Day is often spent at a beach club, which makes it one of the busiest beach days of the season. Booking both days together with the rest of the holiday plan avoids finding the preferred venues full.
What to confirm before paying a deposit
- The exact menu or format for the date, and the price per person.
- Seating time and how long the table is held.
- What the deposit covers and when it becomes non-refundable.
- Whether service charge and taxes are included.
- For beach clubs, the exact bed position and the minimum spend for that day.
How far ahead should you book?
For New Year's Eve, now: dinners and tables for the night are confirmed weeks in advance. For dinners during Christmas week, three to four weeks ahead. Beach club beds can be booked one to two weeks ahead on most days, but the front rows between December 26 and January 1 should be secured with the rest of the trip.
Getting around during the holidays
The Hotel Zone road slows to a crawl in the evening and parking is scarce. Grouping each day by area, beach and dinner on the same stretch of coast, and keeping a driver on call for the night saves hours over the week.
The arrival day deserves the same attention. Flights into Tulum's international airport or Cancún land at peak volume during the holidays, and the drive from Cancún takes around two hours before traffic. A private transfer booked in advance, and a first evening kept simple with a dinner close to where you stay, starts the trip without losing a night to logistics.
